How fees work

Insurance first: which plans, how we check them, and what happens if yours does not work.

  • Insurance we work with

Onyx bills health plans for covered visits. We are in network with many PPO plans and some HMO plans, and we confirm your plan when you write or call. We bill Medicare for covered visits. We do not take Medicaid at this time; if that is your plan, we will help you find a prescriber who does.

    • Medicare for covered visits

    • Medicaid: not at this time

  • Checking your benefits

We check your benefits before your first visit. You give us your plan's name and member details by phone or on our patient portal, never in the website's message form. We ask your plan what it pays for a psychiatric evaluation and for follow-up visits, then tell you in plain words what we learned. Your plan decides when it processes the claim, so what we tell you is an estimate.

  • If you pay yourself

If you have no plan, or we are out of network with yours, you pay for each visit at the end of the visit by card, HSA and FSA cards included. The fee depends on the kind of visit and how long it runs, and we give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

If we are out of network with your plan, we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) after each visit to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Reimbursement is not guaranteed; ask your plan before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before your first visit. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • What the first visit includes

The first visit is a 60-minute evaluation with one of our prescribers: your history, your current medications and what you want help with. It ends with a plan that you and the prescriber agree on, including whether medication fits and when we meet next.

Questions about paying

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes, for visits you pay yourself. We give you an itemized receipt when you ask.

What if my plan changes?

Tell us, and we check your new benefits before your next visit.

What happens if I cancel?

We ask for 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment, so the time can go to someone else. Ask us how this applies to your plan.

Do you give a price list?

We do not print fees on this site. Your fee depends on your plan or on the visit, and we give it to you in writing before you start.

Want your benefits checked?

Write or call with your plan's name. We check it before your first visit.
