Psychiatry for adults · Louisville, Colorado

Psychiatry for adults, through your health plan

Onyx is a Louisville practice of three prescribers. Before your first visit we check your benefits with your plan and tell you what we learn. Evaluations are in person; follow-ups can be by video.

Who we see

Who Onyx is for, and who it is not

  • Adults, 18 and older

You want an evaluation, or a prescriber to take over or continue your medication. Some of our patients also see a therapist elsewhere; with your permission, we coordinate.

  • People using a health plan

Most visits are billed to your plan. If we are out of network with yours, or you have none, we explain the options and give you a written estimate first.

  • Not an emergency service

We cannot respond to a crisis by message or voicemail. If you may harm yourself, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.

  • Not for children and teens

We see adults only. For a child or teen, your pediatrician can point you to a prescriber who does.

Care

Four kinds of visit, each billed as a medical visit

Your plan sets your copay or deductible. We tell you what to expect before you come in.

How benefits are checked

From your insurance card to your first visit

You do not need to know what your plan covers before you write to us. Finding out is our job.

  1. 01

Step 1: You write or call

Tell us the plan you have. You can say it on the phone or send the details through our patient portal after you write. Please leave member numbers out of the website form.

  2. 02

Step 2: We check your benefits

Before your first visit we call your plan and ask what it pays for a psychiatric evaluation and for follow-up visits.

  3. 03

Step 3: We tell you what we learned

You hear your plan's answer in plain words: whether we are in network, and what your copay or deductible is likely to be. It is an estimate; your plan decides when it processes the claim.

  4. 04

Step 4: You decide, then we schedule

If the answer works for you, we book the evaluation. If it does not, we explain the self-pay option and give you a written estimate, or the names of prescribers in your network.

Where we practice

One office on Main Street, and video for follow-ups

Evaluations are at the office. Follow-up visits can be at the office or by video, if you are in Colorado during the visit.

Our prescribers

Three prescribers, one office

You see the same prescriber at each visit. Each one explains what they recommend and why.

Prescribing policy

How we prescribe

A prescriber recommends medication after an evaluation, never before. You decide with them, and you can say no or ask for more time.

  • Our policy is that controlled medications are decided in person, after an evaluation, under Colorado and federal law.
  • We do not prescribe controlled medication at a visit by video.
  • We do not prescribe on the strength of a message, a questionnaire or a call alone.
  • Refills are handled at follow-up visits, so ask a week before you run out.

How fees work

The questions patients ask first, starting with insurance.

  • Insurance we work with

Onyx bills health plans for covered visits. We are in network with many PPO plans and some HMO plans, and we confirm your plan when you write or call. We bill Medicare for covered visits. We do not take Medicaid at this time; if that is your plan, we will help you find a prescriber who does.

    • PPO and some HMO plan types

    • Medicare for covered visits

    • Medicaid: not at this time

  • Checking your benefits

We check your benefits before your first visit. You give us your plan's name and member details by phone or on our patient portal, never in the website's message form. We ask your plan what it pays for a psychiatric evaluation and for follow-up visits, then tell you in plain words what we learned. Your plan decides when it processes the claim, so what we tell you is an estimate.

    • You give plan details by phone or portal

    • We call your plan before the first visit

    Open the patient portal
  • If you pay yourself

If you have no plan, or we are out of network with yours, you pay for each visit at the end of the visit by card, HSA and FSA cards included. The fee depends on the kind of visit and how long it runs, and we give it to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

If we are out of network with your plan, we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) after each visit to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Reimbursement is not guaranteed; ask your plan before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before your first visit. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • What the first visit includes

The first visit is a 60-minute evaluation with one of our prescribers: your history, your current medications and what you want help with. It ends with a plan that you and the prescriber agree on, including whether medication fits and when we meet next.
